About Standing Wool Rug Method |
In order to create traditional standing wool
rugs, you need to stitch narrow strips of thick
wools together so that edges are formed from the
top and bottom surfaces of the rug. There are
several different ways in which you can put
together standing wool rugs. These include
coils, various centers, freeform shapes as well
as various combinations of shirred wools. A
linen cord has traditionally been used to stitch
these types of rugs.
By creating beaded rugs you can come up with
many different and interesting variations of
wool rugs. These rugs are created by taking
small strips of wool, then rolling them into
firm "beads" which will then form the surface of
the rug. In order to assemble these rugs, the
beads are strung, then coiled to form the rug.
Because of their intricate appearance, these
rugs look like they would take a great deal of
time to make, however, they actually can be
assembled rather quickly. The beads are rolled
by laying a wool strip across the palm of the
hand, then sliding the other hand across it.
A lesser used method is used to create more
elaborate and ornate designs in these types of
rugs. To achieve this more complicated method
you need exact placement of each bead. The bead
is placed at a precise location, which becomes a
focal point of color for the designs. By using
this method, the artist can manage slight
shadings and transitions with various colors.
This method is especially effective with plaid
or patterned wool.
