Making a Modern Floor Rug |
Several of the methods which you may use to
create a modern (or old fashioned) floor cloth
are described below.
One method you may use is the old-fashioned
classic floor cloth with linseed oil. The
drawback to this method is that is takes quite a
lot of time during the drying process. However
if an authentic period piece is what you desire,
this is the method you should use. The process
by which linseed oil is produced is by pressing
oil from the flax seed. Flax seed was very
common for hundreds of years because flax was
used to produce linen for cloth.
Start out by using a good quality canvas, denim
or duck, then wash the fabric to remove the
sizing. Cut the piece to about six inches larger
in all directions than the finished floor cloth
so that you can allow for trimming and hemming.
Then stretch the canvas by using staples or
tacks on a wooden frame. Use linseed oil to
saturate the canvas and spread the oil carefully
with a paint brush to prevent puddles and drips.
The linseed oil must penetrate through to the
reverse side. If needed, apply oil to the back
of the canvas also. If the weather is warm and
dry, hang the canvas outside. Depending on the
temperature, as well as the humidity, it may
take several days to dry the canvas. The canvas
will become hard due to the linseed oil that
will stiffen the cloth when it dries.
If you want to create a design on your canvas,
you may stencil or paint it on using natural
pigments that have been dissolved in linseed
oil, artist's oil paints that have been thinned
or oil-based exterior house paint, non-acrylic
spray paint or oil-based hobby paints. The
paints should dry thoroughly, which will take
about three days, unless you use quick drying
spray paints. Then seal the surface with three
coats of a clear varnish. Be sure to let each
coat of varnish dry completely before applying
another coat.
