How to Properly Clean Wool Rugs |
If you have a braided wool rug that is in good
shape, but that is dirty and needs cleaning, the
easiest method to clean it is to follow the
steps outlined below.
The first step is to thoroughly vacuum the rug
on both sides. Do not use the beater bar on your
vacuum cleaner, instead use the suction
attachment only.
(If your braided rug is cotton, insert a step
into your cleaning process. Before using a
carpet cleaning machine, use a mild foam
spray-on carpet cleaner on any spots, stains or
discolorations. This extra precaution should be
taken since cottons hold stains more so than
wools.)
Before proceeding with the cleaning, you need to
lay the rug on a large sheet of plastic so that
you will protect the floor underneath it. Use a
carpet cleaning machine that shoots out water,
then vacuum it up. (Do not use a carpet cleaner
with rotating brushes.) Then clean each side
once with warm water and a mild rug cleaner;
then again with warm water only; and again with
warm water, if necessary, to be sure that the
soap is completely removed. You will need to
suck out as much of the water as possible.
After both sides of the rug have been cleaned,
let the rug dry. It needs to dry flat on the
plastic. It must be turned over a couple of
times in order that both sides are able to dry.
Make sure the rug is thoroughly dry, otherwise,
it will develop a sour smell. After it has dried
flat to keep its shape, finish drying the rug
over a sturdy railing so that it can air dry on
both sides.
Keep in mind that these braided rugs are
extremely heavy so after cleaning your rug, do
not try to turn and handle the rug by yourself.
