About Anchored Loop Rugs |
The anchored loop was often used with many of
the more traditional rugs in the United States.
Anchored loop is a technique that is used to
create rugs on burlap or canvas using strips of
fabrics, or rags. A similar method called the
Australian "locker hooking" is done on burlap or
canvas with yarns and roving. There are two
tools which are used in combination with
anchored loop rugs. These tools are the
traditional rug hook, which is used to pull
through a loop of fabric strip; and the other
tool is a lacing needle or bodkin which is used
to lace the anchoring strip through the loop.
These types of rugs are more durable than
regular hooked rugs because the loops of fabric
cannot be pulled out. To make these rugs in the
United Kingdom, a combined tool is used that
looks like a heavy steel crochet hook at one end
with a large eye at the other end. This enables
the loops to be pulled up, then anchored by
using just one tool. These locker hook tools are
efficient devices to use with rag strips.
The more modern anchored loop rugs utilize a rug
canvas base instead of a burlap base. It is
easier to attain regular stitching with a canvas
base, and it is also much easier to handle when
creating the rug. Tambour braids can also be
used in combination with anchored loop rugs. The
center of this type of rug is an anchored loop
and the border is an uncomplicated tambour
braid. |
